Do Haemorrhoids Need Surgery?

Colorectal & perianal · 1 min

When conservative treatment may be enough and when a procedure is considered.

Most haemorrhoids do not need an operation

Do all haemorrhoids require surgery?
No. Many cases can be managed without surgery, and treatment usually begins with simple measures before any procedure is considered.

If a procedure is needed, the choice depends on the type of haemorrhoids, the grade of internal haemorrhoids and the symptoms. Some internal haemorrhoids can be treated with rubber band ligation or injection sclerotherapy. Surgery may be considered for selected large or prolapsing haemorrhoids, or symptoms that persist despite treatment.

If your symptoms persist or you are unsure of the cause, arrange an assessment.

Haemorrhoids are cushions of blood vessels and supporting tissue in and around the anus. When these become enlarged, they may cause bleeding, itching, discomfort or a lump that protrudes from the anus (prolapse). However, rectal bleeding can also be caused by anal fissures, polyps, bowel inflammation or colorectal cancer.

When should you be assessed?

  • Fresh red blood during bowel movements
  • A lump protruding from the anus
  • Itching, mucus or discomfort
  • Pain or swelling at the anal margin
  • Recurrent symptoms despite medication

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type of haemorrhoids, the severity of symptoms and how much they affect daily life. For internal haemorrhoids, the grade is also considered. Initial treatment may include a diet rich in fibre, adequate fluid intake, stool softeners and medication. If symptoms persist, procedures or surgery may be discussed according to the type of haemorrhoid and the patient’s needs.
